I lona Nord interviews Ted Farris, the grandson of Paul Tillich, on 19.07.2019 in New York.
Ted Farris reports on his memories of his grandparents Paul and Hanna Tillich and his own access to the work of Paul Tillich. The ability to connect Paul Tillich's thoughts to an increasingly mediatized and mechanized todays world also comes into view.
P aul Tillich (1886-1965), German-American Protestant theologian and philosopher. From 1919 to 1933 he taught at several universities.
In 1933, he was suspended because of his leading role at the "Bund religiöser Sozialisten", and emigrated to the USA, where he obtained American citizenship in 1940. After teaching at the Union Theological Seminary in New York, he transferred to Harvard University in 1955 and in 1962 became professor at the University of Chicago.

Religiöse Verwirklichung
Die sozialistische Entscheidung
Paul Tillich's commitment to political and social problems ("Religiöser Sozialismus") and his book "Die sozialistische Entscheidung", published in 1933, arouse the hostility of national socialism, which leads to the suspension from his chair in Frankfurt-on-Main in spring 1933.
In the summer of the same year, American theologians achieve his provisional employment at the "Union Theological Seminary" in New York, and Tillich emigrates to the USA. The originally planned "guest year" was finally to become a full professorship of Philosophical Theology.
